About AIYA

We are a student-led movement dedicated to empowering students and schools to meet the generational challenge of AI.

What We Believe

...

We believe AI represents a generational challenge for today's students.

On the one hand, AI is an incredibly powerful tool that provides an unprecedented opportunity to amplify our ability to solve problems, answer questions, and leverage the entire digital record of human knowledge

At the same time, without the application of a critical framework, AI threatens to harm our cognitive and academic development and well-being. A recent MIT study has shown how uncritical reliance on AI to offload essential academic engagement and cognitive effort can lead to a measurable atrophy in the critical thinking, analytical capacity, and genuine authorship that are integral to subject mastery and learning.

Our Vision

...

To prepare students for success through direct engagement with AI within the structured learning environment of their schools.

We believe the only way to equip students for AI success and inoculate them against the dangers of AI misuse is to provide them with direct, hands-on opportunities to experience the power and pitfalls of AI first-hand through guided experiential programming within the safe, structured learning environment provided by their schools.

Students need hands-on opportunities in their schools to learn to use AI effectively and safely. Without these opportunities, students risk falling behind peers who have attained technical fluency and are in danger of becoming dependent on AI as a substitute for critical thinking and essential cognitive effort.

Our Mission

...

To equip students with foundational AI literacy and fluency in essential AI skills and techniques through experiential programming while advancing conversations around best-practices at and between schools around the world.

AI is advancing at such a rapid pace that it is impossible for schools to keep up. AI curricula are out of date before they can be implemented or even adequately designed. At the same time, as AI capabilities increase exponentially, students face increasing threats of emotional, cognitive, and academic harms as well as potentially negative career outcomes when they engage with AI uncritically as a substitute for cognitive effort and to replace agency and authorship in learning. Consequently it is more urgent than ever for students to develop critical literacy and fluency with AI.

At AIYA, our approach is to partner with our network of students and faculty to support collaborative spaces within which students can safely explore the cutting-edge of AI uses and applications. Instead of a formal curriculum, we provide structured activities and experiences designed to equip students with the critical literacy and skills needed to succeed in an AI future.

Our ultimate aim is to build a vibrant, self-sustaining student-led community that supports the safe exploration of best-practices around cutting-edge uses of AI in learning. Our spirit is fundamentally hands-on and experiential, prioritizing learning by doing.
